Georgia Board of Nursing Challenged by Certified Professional Midwife in Federal Lawsuit!

In October we shared that one of Georgia’s finest midwives was being told she could not call herself a midwife because she was not a nurse. Even though she never held herself out to be a nurse, she was given a Cease and Desist by the Board of Nursing.

In a surprising turn of events, this midwife has been named in a federal lawsuit against the Georgia Board of Nursing! This could be a protective measure for Certified Professional Midwives in the state of Georgia as we work towards getting the state to recognize our certification with bills like HB717.

What is a Certified Professional Midwife? So glad you ask! Certified Professional Midwives have NEVER identified as nursing. In fact, Certified Professional Midwives are trained to work outside of the hospital and do not find that nursing education prepares well for that. (We love nurses, but we don’t want to be one!)
