Giving back to midwives this Giving Tuesday

Do you remember how you felt when your midwife walked in the door? The person that you have counted on for your whole pregnancy was finally there, ready to assist you in having your baby no matter what time or day it was.

Your baby came, howling into this world, welcomed by your midwife’s skilled hands. Or. Maybe the day didn’t go so smoothly and those skilled hands were needed to help your baby breathe or stop a hemorrhage. Maybe that calm presence was needed to guide you into making the tough choice to change your plans for your birth.

Midwives are on call 24 hours a day, seven days a week. We miss funerals and weddings, we leave family birthday parties, and every event we plan is peppered with, “unless I’m at a birth!”

On top of all of the things a midwife gives, she also risks a criminal record for providing prenatal care for you and attending your birth.

Without licensure:

-midwives are at risk of prosecution

-student midwives no longer have access to federally funded, accredited midwifery schools

-midwives do not have legal access to vital supplies and emergency  medication that every birthing woman deserves

To gain licensure we must:

-fight against large physician and hospital lobbying associations

-educate the Georgia General Assembly on what midwives can do

-never give up.

Make a bold statement today to stand with your midwives, the future midwives, and all of the daughters who will give birth!
